Historical Tree
St. John Lodge #48 was started and organized in 1949. The lodge was developed under the Modern Supreme Council Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Incorporated. St. John Lodge #48 was the second oldest black Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Incorporated in North Carolina. In 1959, the lodge changed its name to St. John Lodge #11B and moved to a new organization called Calvary Grand Council Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite. From 1959 until 1977, the lodge ran and was operated as St. John Lodge #11B. This lodge changed its name in 1977, to St. John Lodge #778 when it came under the National Supreme Council Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite. National Supreme Council was the oldest black Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite in America at that time. In 2004, St. John Lodge #778 left the National Supreme Council and went to the United National Supreme Council Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite and changed its name to St. John Lodge #204. The United National Supreme Council was formed in 1980, by the late Most Puissant Sovereign Grand Commander Illustrious, Wendell Daniels, and the current Most Puissant Sovereign Grand Commander Illustrious, James E. Smith. Both Daniels and Smith were former members of the Calvary Grand Council and Modern Free Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. In 2006, St. John Lodge #204 departed from United National Supreme Council and joined Mount Luxor Supreme Council Ancient and Accepted Afro-American Rite. Thirteen members from St. Lodge #204 received their 33rd degrees which were bestowed to them by Most Puissant Sovereign Grand Commander Robert Thompson 33rd. The name of St. John Lodge #204 was then changed to St. John Lodge #1. Finally, in 2007, St. John Lodge #1 departed Mount Luxor Supreme Council and returned to the United National Supreme Council. Upon this return, St. John Lodge #1 changed its name back to St. John Lodge #204, and the name remains the same to this day. Shortly after 8 members separated from the lodge due to living arrangements which they travel over an hour to get to the current lodge, formed a new lodge named Gabriel Lodge #115 located in Greensboro NC. Now under new jurisdiction of the United Grand Lodge of North Carolina AF & AM working with S.O.G.L.I.A (Society Of Grand Lodges In Alliances).
